What Should I Expect From My First Xcycle Class?

By Xavier Arrillaga | Founder of Xcycle | 25+ Years of Indoor Cycling Experience

Trying something new can feel intimidating, especially when it comes to fitness. Maybe you've never taken an indoor cycling class, you're returning to exercise after a long break, or you're worried you won't be able to keep up.

After more than 25 years of teaching indoor cycling, I've worked with people of all fitness levels. And there's one thing I always tell beginners:

You don't have to keep up with anyone else. You just have to find your own pace.

At Xcycle, we believe your first class should be exciting, welcoming, and personalized to your abilities. Our goal isn't to push you to your limits on day one. It's to help you discover a workout you'll enjoy enough to make part of your life.

Here's what you can expect from your first Xcycle experience.

1. Your First Class Starts With Personal Attention

We recommend arriving 15 minutes before your first class so we can welcome you and get everything ready.

One of our trained instructors will help you adjust your bike, ask about your exercise experience and fitness goals, and address any concerns.

This conversation matters because no two riders start from the same place.

Some arrive with years of cycling experience. Others haven't exercised consistently in a long time. And some have never tried indoor cycling before.

All of them belong in our classes.

Your instructor will explain how Xcycle works, how to control your intensity, and what makes our approach different.

And the attention doesn't stop when the music starts. Throughout class, our instructors regularly step off their bikes to check on participants, offer guidance, and make sure new riders feel comfortable.

You're never expected to figure everything out on your own.

2. An Immersive Indoor Cycling Experience

Imagine walking into a studio filled with colorful lights, energetic music, and immersive music videos.

That's part of what makes Xcycle special.

We've created an environment where cardiovascular exercise feels less like another task on your schedule and more like an experience you look forward to.

During your workout, music, visual effects, lighting, and group energy come together to make every class dynamic and engaging.

But there's something even more important happening.

For many riders, those 50 minutes become an opportunity to disconnect from everyday responsibilities and reconnect with themselves.

You might arrive thinking about work, family, or your to-do list. But once the music starts, your attention shifts toward your breathing, your body, and the way movement makes you feel.

It's not just about improving your fitness. It's about enjoying the process and leaving class feeling better than when you arrived.

3. Heart Rate Tracking: Your Workout, Your Pace

One of Xcycle's unique features is our heart-rate monitoring technology.

During class, you can see your heart rate displayed in real time alongside other participating riders.

For beginners, this might seem intimidating. But here's something important:

Seeing everyone's heart rate doesn't mean you're competing against them.

We use technology to help you understand your own effort, not pressure you into matching someone else's performance.

Every rider has different abilities, goals, and experience.

At Xcycle, we encourage everyone to listen to their body and work at an appropriate intensity.

Why Controlled Intensity Matters

Throughout my career, I've seen how easily people confuse a harder workout with a better workout.

But more intensity isn't always better.

Our approach focuses on controlled speed, appropriate resistance, and an effort that challenges you without unnecessary excess.

We want you to improve progressively, build confidence, and develop consistency.

The best workout isn't necessarily the one that leaves you exhausted. It's the one that helps you improve and makes you want to return.

4. Your First 10 Minutes: Start Easy

One of the most common mistakes beginners make is trying to imitate experienced riders.

They see someone pedaling faster or standing on the bike and feel they should do the same.

My advice? Don't worry about what anyone else is doing.

During your first 10 minutes, keep your effort light. Give your body time to warm up, get comfortable, and understand the class.

As your confidence grows, gradually increase your intensity.

Remember:

  • You can remain seated throughout the entire class.
  • You can reduce speed or resistance whenever necessary.
  • You can take breaks when needed.
  • You don't have to match experienced riders.
  • If you need to stop early, that's perfectly okay.

Building cardiovascular fitness takes time. Meaningful improvements often develop over weeks or months of consistent training.

Your first class isn't a test of your fitness level. It's the beginning of your progress.

5. Real Transformations Start With One Class

One of the things I love most about teaching is watching people transform, physically and emotionally.

Over the years, we've witnessed many inspiring stories at Xcycle.

One that stands out is Ana's.

When Ana joined us about four months ago, she had limited cardiovascular fitness and strength. She also felt insecure about her abilities.

But the encouragement of our instructors and the energy of the group motivated her to return.

Little by little, she became stronger, more confident, and more consistent.

Today, her cardiovascular fitness has improved, she's reduced her body-fat percentage, and she carries herself with greater confidence.

She smiles more, has more energy, and has developed friendships within our community.

She's even become comfortable wearing workout clothes she previously felt too self-conscious to wear.

For me, Ana's transformation represents what Xcycle is really about.

Physical progress matters, but so do confidence, friendships, and discovering what you're capable of.

And it all started with one class.

6. What Should You Bring to Your First Xcycle Class?

You don't need previous cycling experience or special equipment to get started.

Here's what I recommend:

  • Arrive 15 minutes early: We'll adjust your bike, explain the workout, and answer your questions.
  • Wear comfortable athletic clothing: Choose something that allows you to move freely.
  • Bring athletic sneakers or cycling shoes: Comfortable, appropriate footwear is important.
  • Bring water and a sweat towel: You'll appreciate having both nearby.
  • Consider a light snack: Depending on your preferences and digestion, eating something light about 60 minutes before class may help provide energy.
  • Come with an open mind: You don't need to perform like someone who's been training for years.

We'll help you with the rest.

7. What Makes Xcycle Different From Traditional Spinning?

When I founded Xcycle, I wanted to combine the excitement of indoor cycling with a smarter, more personalized training approach.

After decades of teaching, I became convinced that a great workout should challenge people while respecting their individual abilities.

That's why Xcycle doesn't rely on complicated choreography or movements that distract riders from controlling their effort.

Instead, we focus on:

  • Personalized intensity: Everyone trains at their own appropriate level.
  • Measurable effort: Heart-rate technology helps you understand your workout.
  • Controlled training: Speed and resistance create a manageable challenge.
  • Immersive experiences: Music, videos, and lighting make exercise enjoyable.
  • Professional guidance: Instructors provide attention before and during class.
  • Supportive community: Riders encourage one another and celebrate progress.

Our Goal Isn't to Exhaust You. It's to Help You Progress.

I don't want someone finishing their first class feeling so overwhelmed that they never want to return.

I want them to leave feeling proud.

Proud they showed up. Proud they challenged themselves. Proud they did something positive for their health.

And most importantly, excited to come back.

Because lasting fitness results don't come from one incredibly difficult workout.

They come from showing up consistently, challenging yourself appropriately, and gradually becoming stronger.

That's the philosophy behind Xcycle.

8. Your First Ride Is Just the Beginning

If you're considering Xcycle but you're worried you're not fit enough or experienced enough, remember this:

You don't need to be in shape to start Xcycle. You come to Xcycle to build your fitness.

Our instructors are here to guide you. Our community is here to encourage you. And your progress will always be your own.

You don't need to follow anyone else's pace or prove anything.

Just show up, get on the bike, listen to your body, and enjoy the experience.

Who knows? A few months from now, you might look back and realize your first class was the beginning of a much bigger transformation.
